Sickness-related absenteeism costs UK plc around £13 billion per year and, as an overweight Britain heads for a diabetes epidemic and stress in the workplace spirals out of control, the Government is increasingly looking towards employers to help improve individual health and wellbeing.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the biggest killer in the UK - and our death rates are amongst the highest in the world. Diabetes and obesity, along with smoking, an unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, raised blood pressure and cholesterol are all closely linked to CHD, which costs the UK economy £7 billion each year!
A recent report - "UK Companies: Looking forward to a healthy future" - found that 80% of the 600+ Senior HR professionals they surveyed predicted that the health of the UK workforce would deteriorate in the next 5 - 10 years and 87% of these respondents felt that this would lead to a deterioration in the morale and productivity of their workforce.
